Despite the legal cannabis industry being estimated to hit $34 billion in 2024, there are still an estimated 40,000 people in prison for marijuana offenses.
Grassland is proud to be partnering with Last Prisoner Project in their pursuit to free the tens of thousands of individuals still unjustly imprisoned for marijuana offenses.
Serving Those Directly Impacted
We are building out our impact and advocacy campaign from the grassroots level, providing paid opportunities for those directly impacted by the U.S. criminal legal system to have a seat at the table through all levels of production.
Some of the opportunities we have already provided include:
Hiring crew members who were formerly incarcerated.
Hiring consulting producers with lived experience with the criminal legal system.
Curating special programming where guest speakers came to share their experience with incarceration. One of these guests included songwriter Kenyatta Emmanuel, an artist and activist who has shared his music from Sing Sing to Carnegie Hall, after serving 24 years in prison.
Hiring Transformational Prison Project to lead healing circles for the cast and crew, in order to build understanding and empathy toward those who have been victims of violent crime.
